Watercolors by Tom Ryan
I love to create luminous and colorful watercolors that depict serenity, harmony, and beauty. I find transparent watercolor the ideal medium to capture these effects as well as shifting moods. For many paintings, I first soak the watercolor paper in water and utilize a wet-in-wet technique to allow the paint, water, and paper to spontaneously interact and create wonderfully mysterious effects and soft edges. Once the paper dries, I add strong vivid color for interest and to emphasize the focal point in the painting.
I have taught beginning and intermediate watercolor classes at Saratoga Arts for many years and have led beginning and intermediate watercolor workshops in Glens Falls, Clifton Park, Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Blue Mountain Lake, and other locations. I was awarded signature membership in the North East Watercolor Society and am past president of the Upper Hudson Valley Watercolor Society, Glens Falls, New York. Currently, with Sue Beadle, I am co-leader of a regional plein air painters group, Plein Air Adirondack. I have also led local workshops in plein air painting.
